Top Soil
The outermost layer of soil, usually the top 5–10 inches. It has the highest concentration of organic matter and microorganisms and is where most of the Earth’s biological soil activity occurs.
Fill Sand
This is a material used primarily for fill. It has not been processed so it can be fairly clumpy. There is no organic matter added to it and it compacts very well.
Sand Clay
A mixture of material that is 35 percent or more clay and 45 percent or more sand.
Gravel
A loose aggregation of rock fragments. Gravel is classified by particle size range and includes size classes from granule to boulder-sized fragments.
